2017 Aglianico del Vulture Reserve “Massaron”
2017 Aglianico del Vulture Reserve “Massaron”
2017 Aglianico del Vulture Reserve “Massaron”
Lagala’s Aglianico del Vulture “Massaron” is the flagship of the estate employing only their top fruit and only produced in exceptional years. At 15% alcohol it is a serious wine with firm tannins and a rich full palate. It is quite “modern” in its flavour profile and quite approachable given its Reserve namesake and represents the new wave of wines from Vulture. With the use of barrique both in fermentation and in aging those often-aggressive Aglianico tannins are softened. Massaron has garnered loads of attention from both Gambero Rosso (2 glasses) as well as Sud Wine where it was recognized as one of the top wines in Southern Italy.

Vinification:
Fruit is triaged followed by crush and destemming. This is followed by 15-20 days of maceration with the skins at a temperature of 25 ° C . Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place in barrique for a period of 2 years. The wine then spends 24 months ageing in French oak barrique and older tonneaux, then left to mature in stainless steel tanks until the pre-bottling phase. Release is usually made to coincide with the cool spring season and is subsequently released on the market after at least six months of bottle aging.
Tasting:
Intense ruby red color with shades tending to orange with longer aging. Hints of ripe fruit, bitter almond, berries, chocolate and vanilla; elegant on the palate, round and soft; well-structured with the presence of ripe and mature tannins.
Try with:
grilled meats, roasts, game and aged cheeses.
